Empowering Pharmacy Program Students with Specialized Training in Medical Cannabis and Patient Care
With medical cannabis now legalized in 37 states, Washington D.C., and several U.S. territories, the demand for qualified professionals in the industry has never been greater. The National Conference of State Legislatures reports that up to three million patients are using cannabis to treat conditions like neurological disorders, dependencies, and inflammatory diseases. Because of this growing need for expertise, PCOM Georgia’s Doctor of Pharmacy students can now specialize in medical cannabis.
This new concentration stems from a partnership between PCOM and Pennsylvania-approved research center Organic Remedies. Through this collaboration, PCOM aims to provide students with specialized training to meet the increasing demand for medical cannabis knowledge.
Training the Next Generation of Pharmacists
Julie Wickman, PharmD, assistant dean of clinical and experiential affairs at PCOM, emphasized the crucial role pharmacists play in dispensing cannabis in states like Pennsylvania. PCOM’s medical cannabis concentration equips pharmacy students with the tools they need to understand the therapeutic uses of cannabis, the legal landscape, and how to consult with patients. As part of their training, students will gain hands-on experience at Philadelphia-area dispensaries in their fourth year of the program.
Wickman added that this concentration also covers key regulatory issues, ensuring students are prepared to navigate all laws.
Filling a Critical Workforce Gap
Michael Lee, PhD, assistant dean for professional and student affairs at PCOM, highlighted the national workforce demand for pharmacists with expertise. “The role of pharmacists in medical cannabis is pivotal,” said Lee. “Our goal is to position PCOM as a leader in this emerging field.”
Students completing the concentration will be well-versed in the pharmacology of cannabinoids like THC and CBD, dosing strategies, and compliance. The program requires six credit hours of coursework, while also including hands-on experience at Organic Remedies.
PCOM’s initiative provides a unique opportunity for students to enter a rapidly evolving field, addressing both patient needs and legal complexities while helping to shape the future of medical cannabis treatment.
